A Flexible FormThe Milwaukee duplex's plan can be broken down into three main zones. The first zone is made up of a sequence of entry thresholds that lead into the public entry and parlor rooms at the front of the home.
The second zone is a zone of staying and entertainment. This area of the home includes the dining room, which is often the most ornamental room of the home. The space is open to the first zone with a threshold marking the shift in program. The next zone is closed off with a door. The third zone houses the domestic spaces of the home, including the kitchen, bathroom, circulation core, and bedrooms. A side entry in this rear zone allows for an alternate sequence of procession in the home. The home is also divided down the middle into an entry module and window module with a path for circulation cutting through the center on the entry side. The circulation side is more open to activity while the side with the bay window lends itself to staying. |
